Stop What You’re Doing And Watch The Hell Out Of This of the Day: Openly gay Fort Worth City Councilman Joel Burns uses his allotted announcement time to speak out against anti-gay bullying, share an emotional story from his own difficult past, and assure gay teens that it gets better.

[slog.]

I would like to say that as someone who has had so many wonderful, amazing lesbian, gay, and bisexual friends that I love all of you. And that if it wasn’t for some of you, I would’ve never made it through middle school and high school.

In Elementary School I was constantly harassed for being short and a girl.

In Middle School I was constantly harassed for being a “lesbian” despite being actually straight. But hey, I hung out with homosexuals, that must mean I am one (that’s their logic), and I preferred to wear the opposite gender’s clothing and cut my hair really short.

In High School I got some residual from the “lesbian” taunts and the slurs about my gender but it gets better. Things turned out for the better for me and for my homosexual/bisexual compadres. Things really do get better. Now I’m respected at my college and not ridiculed for any of the above things any longer. People are much more accepting at this place. If I want to wear men’s clothes, who gives a damn? No one important, that’s for sure.

So please, know that things will get better and us allies are here for you no matter what! We love you so much.
